"Captain! Monsters sighted off the port bow, heading right for us!"
Kennit raced after the crewman, through the passageways of the Vivacia. They burst onto the deck in a flurry of activity, pirates readying weapons. There wasn't a chance of getting away; the monsters were moving too fast. Their only chance was to fight.
Kennit made for the bow, hand raised to his eye. The enchanted lens over it flickered, disturbing his vision for a moment, and then magnified his vision as he looked over the bows.
A cluster of a lumpy creatures, suspended in the air by whirling wings, floated at high speed towards them. Below them was a pack of the massive sharks that had grown to be called Gyorgs.
Kennit fumbled for his weapons, and cursed softly when he found they weren't there. He turned at a sailor's call, "Cap'n! I got these from your cabin!"
He took the guns from the pirate's grasp, and began loading them. The monsters had come into cannon range, and the crew had taken advantage of it. The monsters dodged almost all of the cannons, but a chance shot managed to tangle one of the flying monster's wings. It tumbled into the sea and disappeared under the waves, to a cheer.
"Load a bomb into the cannon. Aim it into the water, in the midst of the Gyorgs." Kennit quietly commanded.
The Gyorgs avoided it, but didn't expect its explosive qualities. The explosion blew away at least half of the gigantic sharks, and the rest held back, hesitant. The flying monsters were the only threat now.
Kennit opened fire as the leader of the monsters came into range. The countless iron pellets bounced off the hide of the creature. He cursed again, and took aim with the second gun. He waited for it to get closer, and prayed to his luck.
This time, he aimed for the wings holding it in the air. The shot tangled them hopelessly, spoiling their momentum and sending the creature into the water.
"Aim for the wings! They need them to survive!"
Heeding that command, the crew went to work. Cannon, shot, bullets, and even rope were shot or thrown at the monsters, always aiming for their leaf-like wings. Within a few moments of it starting, the battle was over.
There was a cheer from the crew, "King Kennit! King Keennit!"

Kat slumped into her chair, exhausted from a day of casting magic. They had only just barely repelled this attack, and it was only a preliminary scouting group. The remnants of the navy, what hadn't been destroyed during the war, had been reduced to so many chunks of wood. Everybody on the island... was stuck there, until ships came from the Church of Farore or their deaths.
It looked like the latter would come much sooner.
It was hopeless; they faced an enemy of near-infinite numbers, which had no qualms of throwing wave after wave at their defenses until they collapsed. The men of Windfall were demoralized, by both their horrifying situation and the very fact that monsters once more roamed the Great Sea.
Well, she'd have to do the best she could. Perhaps they could hold out until reinforcements came....
Not a very good chance, but a chance all the same.
