Well, I may as well try and force myself to actually write 1k words each week. (If I don't, I have to give up chocolate for the following week )
Aaaanyways, tell me what you think:
Two figures walked slowly through the dark streets, talking quietly. The moon was out above them, half hidden behind a few small wisps of clouds. There was a chill in the air, but neither man wore a cloak to keep wrapped up in.
Few other people were out, though a couple of revellers were just leaving an inn. The two men avoided them, walking over to the other side of the street. The revellers paid them no attention, but the men still watched them with caution.
After walking for a short length, the pair stopped and leant against a wall. A few metres away, a gate was lit up by torches in brackets. Two guards stood by the closed metal gate, staring somewhat lifelessly into the night.
One of the men, the taller, turned to the other. “Jake, this the one you’re thinking of?”
“Yeah, this one’ll do very nicely. Nothing much past these guards except for a nice long garden to stroll across.”
“Right, let’s go.”
“OK, but be careful, Tim. You know light can cause troubles for you.”
“Not that many. See you in there.” With that, Tim nodded, and walked towards the gate. The guards, immediately more alert, watched as he approached. As soon as he was close enough, one shouted out “Hey, what’re you doing here?”
Tim, turning more to face them, peered through the darkness as if he had trouble seeing. “Well, sirs, I’m here t’see my brother. He works ‘ere, and it’s ‘is birthday and all and I thought I’d visit him but not when his master were around so as not to cause trouble for him.” The accent was thick and fake, but Tim hoped that he guards couldn’t tell. People round this town seemed to talk like that anyway.
“Go away, it’s near to midnight. I don’t care who your relative is, it’s too late to let anyone near this place.”
“But surely you can let me in, jus’ briefly…”
The guard took a step closer, and frowned. “No, now look, get gone or I’ll have to get you arrested.”
“Aww, no, you wouldn’t do that, surely. C’mon, be fair now.” Tim started to walk towards the gate. The guard put a hand to his sword.
“Stop now, before I have you taken away.”
Tim smiled slightly in the darkness, and drew a knife from the folds of his jacket. “Make me.” While he admitted it was not an original line, the guards perked up immediately at the sight of the light glinting off metal. Both drew their swords and started forwards. Tim danced backwards a few steps, looking unhurried. The guards followed, taking yet more steps away from their posts.
Tim smiled, flourishing the knife as if to attack. One of the guards rushed forwards, knocking his arm out the way. The other ran to grab the knife from his now unresisting hand.
Behind them, the gate ever so slowly opened very slightly. Jake crept in, and walked quietly behind the wall, out of sight. Tim nodded. Before the guards could get hold of him, he ducked, narrowly missing their arms. A boot flew in to kick at him, but he grabbed it and sent the man reeling backwards.
Trying to hurry out of their reach, Tim quickly brought his hands up and sketched a symbol in the air before him, muttering a few words. His outline blurred, and he vanished.
The guards stopped in their tracks, gasping. Mutters ran between the two of them and they looked frantically around. The slightest hint of heavy breathing was all that was left, and Tim quickly tried to calm himself down. No matter how many times he pulled the same trick, adrenalin always did its not-so-subtle work to try and foil him.
Unseen but not unsearched for, he carefully crept, as silently as he could, around the guards, who were still looking for him. The gate creaked slightly as it closed, and he was in.
Tim reappeared, safely out of sight behind the wall, with Jake nearby. His friend smiled, and covered his mouth to stifle a laugh.
“That was nice. Their faces are always priceless.”
Tim smiled down at him. “I’m glad you enjoyed the show so much. Now, how about we see what this place has for the taking.”
Jake nodded slowly. “But be careful, will you? Vanishing’ll do you no good if they get hold of you first.”
Tim laughed “Give it a rest. Stop being so paranoid. They hardly even suspect we’re here.”
“But, Tim, be realistic….”
Tim rolled his eyes, and started jogging towards the house. Jake followed, looking nervously around. The garden they ran through was covered by trees, bushes and flowers, though there was a long gravel path leading up to the house. The two men avoided this, running instead between patches of deeper shadow that covered the bases of trees.
As the got right up to the house, they saw another pair of guards, one standing either side of the main doors. Tim grinned – clearly this was a worthwhile target. The two snuck around, staying just out of sight of the torchlight. They stopped when they finally reached a smaller backdoor. It was, of course, locked, and Jake’s quiet pulling of the door handle did nothing to budge it.
Tim laughed quietly, leaning down to talk to his friend “And this is why I bring you along, eh?”
Jake smiled uncertainly back, but nodded. He raised his hands, placing the first two fingers of one between his eyes. Muttering a few words, he used the other hand to draw an invisible symbol on the side of the lock. He blinked, and his eyes glazed when he opened them again.
“It’s…nothing too hard…There’s nothing but the lock, and that’s nicely oiled, too.” He reached carefully into his pockets without looking, and pulled out a small piece of metal. He put the piece of metal into the lock, still focused on it, and after a few seconds there was a small click. The lock sprang open, and he dropped it to the ground.
Jake continued to peer at the door intently, even after the lock had dropped. Finally he nodded, and pushed the door open.
